Call for applications for the ‘BNAC PhD Dissertation Prize 2020′

Following the success and popularity of the PhD Dissertation Prize in 2018 and 2019, the Britain-Nepal Academic Council (BNAC) is pleased to announce its ‘PhD Dissertation Prize’ for 2020. To mark the 20^th year of the BNAC’s existence, we are pleased to announce two prizes this year. Applications are invited from eligible candidates by 29th February 2020. Details of the call including eligibility criteria and instructions for preparing your submission are as follows:

Eligibility

1. Applicants must either be registered for a PhD in South Asia, the UK, or in other EU countries, or have graduated from one of these countries within the last two years (i.e. have passed their PhD no earlier than 1 January 2018).
2. Applicants who took part in the 2018 and 2019 Prize competitions and did not win the prize may also apply with a new paper, if they meet the above eligibility criterion (point 1).

PhD Paper

1. Applicants should submit a chapter, a paper submitted for review, or a published paper from their PhD thesis not exceeding 10,000 words; and
2. The PhD paper should be in the fields of the social sciences or humanities, and related to Nepal or the Nepali cultural world, broadly understood.
3. Applicants should also submit evidence of their eligibility along with their paper.

(Clarification: (a) The PhD paper must be single-authored, and (b) papers in technical fields dealing with social dimensions, such as public health and community forestry will be accepted.)

Deadlines

1. Deadline for submission of applications: 23.59 BST on 29th February 2020.
2. Notification of the winner: 31 March 2020.
3. Award of the prize: 5 May 2020, in UCL London, at the BNAC Nepal Study Days.

Selection

1. The winners will be selected on a competitive basis by the BNAC PhD Dissertation Prize sub-committee.

The prize

1. The two winning candidates will each receive a cash prize of £250.
2. The candidates coming third and fourth will also be named, providing there are sufficient submissions of quality.
3. The prize winners are encouraged (not obliged) to attend the Nepal Study Days on the 4 and 5 May 2020, and to present their paper there.
